What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Unlike older keys, modern car keys have specific chips that are specific to each vehicle. This prevents thieves from just taking the key and starting the car.

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is interrogated it sends out a signal encoded with the four-digit code. This signal, known as a SQUAWK Code is used to locate aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to transmit specific messages to the air traffic control system in an emergency situation or to inform controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes are often used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot cannot talk on the radio and are very important for safe flying.

Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar probes by identifying a code. This allows ATC to locate the aircraft in a busy radar screen. When the security light of a car is illuminated, it means that the ID code in the key isn't compatible with the code in the vehicle's computer. The car's immobilizer will be disabled, and it won't be able to start unless a different key is used. PIN Codes

A PIN code is a collection of numbers (usually between four and six digits) that can be used to gain access to a device or system. In North America, the 10th through 17th digits of the VIN code are referred to as the Vehicle Identification Section, or VIS. The tenth and eleventh digits indicate the year of manufacture. The eleventh digit indicates which assembly plant manufactured the vehicle. In addition the tenth through 17th digits may contain additional information, including features or options that are installed in the vehicle.

The six digits that make up the VIN code form a sequential serial number that uniquely identifies the vehicle or truck. The final digit is also the check digit, and the remaining digits are transliterated to numbers. The first digit is given a value of 8, and each subsequent digit increases in value by one, until the seventh digit is nine, which then becomes two. Then the whole VIN will be converted back to its original format by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is the same as the check digit then the VIN will be valid.

Data Transfer
